Lots of questions for mayor and council

All Victorians share the concern over the pace of reconciliation with our First Nations neighbours. A very vigorous national debate on the report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission continues. If ever Victorians have looked to their collective elected leaders for thoughtful, effective solutions, this is that time for leadership from city council.

But local taxpayers are hard-pressed to understand why city council is even considering a donation fund for when you pay property taxes. There are lots and lots of questions:

  • Does council realize all residents – property owners plus renters – are already free to donate to any First Nation at any time?
  • Why would council go outside their jurisdiction on reconciliation and meddle in what is primarily a senior government responsibility?
  • Now that the city is acting like a non-governmental agency will it be collecting funds for the Red Cross, Ukrainian refugees, the Victoria Family Foundation, and other worthy causes?
  • Hasn’t council already committed $200,000 annually to Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations?
  • Don’t taxpayers already contribute to federal, provincial and municipal programs to benefit First Nations?
  • Will the administrative costs for this program be recovered from funds donated, if not, why not?
  • How will the city maintain financial accountability for the donations?
  • Will council clarify its relationship and the roles between themselves and the organization Reciprocity Trusts, and indicate if there are associated costs?
  • Why won’t council defer this initiative to the fall municipal election for broader public discussion?

Does anyone else think that this initiative represent cynical politics more than sincerity? We urge residents to also direct their own questions to mayor and council.
