Howls of protest expected
City council is considering a bylaw that all dogs be painted white to improve road safety because they could then be seen more easily at night.
It’s estimated 35% of Canadian households have a dog and that there are about 5.9 million dogs, according to a recent Ipsos Reid poll. So, there are tens of thousands of dogs in Victoria and on the South Island after you consider visitors.
“We loudly condemn this latest step to control our lives,” says Stan Bartlett, vice-chair of Grumpy Taxpayer$ of Greater Victoria.
“As if trying to ban Christmas, making veterans pay for Remembrance Day, defunding the police, trying to cancel Canada Day, and trying to ban horse-drawn carriages wasn’t enough.”
With a municipal election this fall it’s our suspicion that the law had only been put forward because of pressure from veterinarians and the painters’ union, says Bartlett.
Thousands of dog owners and our best friends congregate in the City of Victoria, and a more practical solution would be to outfit them with white vests and or reflectors and or lights.
This latest example of failed municipal governance will divide the public, be costly to enforce by bylaw officers, and prompt howls of protest.

Ha, ha, think the paint should be pink, as most dogs are girls.
