Council talking to taxpayers after the fact

First there’s a cart.

City council in Victoria is meeting April 18 (today) with plans for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd readings of two bylaws, the 2024 Five-year Financial Plan and the 2024 Tax Rates and Taxes.

And there’s a whinnying horse well-behind.

For some reason next Thursday, Apr. 25 taxpayers can attend a public input opportunity called a ‘2024 Draft Budget Have Your Say’ session.

“So why is council dealing with bylaws on a financial plan and tax rates today, says Stan Bartlett, vice-chair of the municipal watchdog Grumpy Taxpayer$.

“Then a week from now are asking taxpayers to weigh in on the 2024 Draft Budget. Is this the perfect case of a horse well behind the cart ? ! “

It’s not the first time that public consultations are an after thought for city council, referencing a recent Times Colonist commentary entitled Victoria council failed to consult public on huge pay increase, says Bartlett.

Why are we spending precious tax dollars on council and staff time after decisions have already been made? asks Bartlett.

The communications and engagement department has asked for a 34 percent increase to $2.7 million in the Draft Financial Plan 2024-28
